Frequently Asked Questions

Supply

Your energy comes from electricity generated into the National Electricity Market (NEM), supplied to you via the electricity network. The renewable component of your supply will be fed into the NEM by the specified renewable energy generator: this could be wind, solar or hydro generation.

We are fortunate to have a market with very high reliability standards (99.998%!). We only work with well-established retailers, meaning that any risk to the supply and sale of energy to you is minimised.

Generation, including green energy, is fed into the energy network. The amount of green energy you have negotiated with your retailer will come from equivalent green energy sources with the appropriate certificates to support that.

By law, Australia requires that approximately 20% of all energy comes from renewable sources. We can source anywhere from this mandated 20%, to 100% of your energy from renewable sources.

If you have multiple sites across Australia, we will negotiate with either one or multiple retailers in each State to achieve the best deal for you. Managing multiple contracts and invoices is made easy through your subscription to our EdgeLive platform. We do all the work for you.

Technical

It may be necessary for your energy meter to be changed, although this is not always the case. Changing your meter is common and usually done to read your energy meter with their technology remotely. Switching your energy meter comes at no additional cost to you.

Your offer will be valid for a specified number of days after you have received it from Edge Utilities. This can be as short as 2 days, and up to 7 days. It is critical that you execute all relevant documentation to secure an offer. Failure to do so may result in subsequent offers being less competitive due to changes in underlying electricity market pricing. Our team will be available to answer any questions you may have prior to accepting an offer.

The conditions of your contract will determine this and specify if there are any exit conditions. We advise you to read the terms & conditions of your existing contract before accepting any new offer made through the Edge Utilities Power Portfolio. Our team are available to assist you where possible.

Savings

Edge Utilities is backed by Edge2020, which has been operating in the energy market for over 14 years. Edge2020 manages the portfolios of some of Australia’s largest users of energy, who collectively purchase over $1 billion in energy in any given year. By leveraging the expertise, relationships with retailers and systems of Edge2020, Edge Utilities is perfectly placed to achieve great savings for your business and provide you with the support needed to ensure your business energy requirements are taken care of.

Your savings can depend on several factors, including the size of the cohort portfolio we are taking to market and the market forces at the time. When we submit an offer to you, we will present a comparison between what you are currently paying and what you will be saving with your new offer.

Generation

Although the energy you are drawing from the electricity grid will be a combination of all energy sources, the percentage of your energy apportioned to renewable energy in your contract will be defined by the relevant renewable certificates associated with this renewable energy.

Any renewable energy contract is likely to include some degree of traditional energy sources. This is essential for when renewables aren’t generating. If required and where possible, Edge Utilities will always aim to supplement renewable energy with low carbon intensity generation sources. Pumped storage hydro, gas, and coal generation are still utilised extensively in Australia to meet power requirements when the sun isn’t shining, the wind isn’t blowing, or renewable energy storage isn’t importing to the grid.

Distribution Network Service Providers

Whilst ensuring the lowest energy and environmental costs for your energy requirements, Edge Utilities will also look at your network tariffs to ensure the price you are paying for distribution and transmission services is minimised. If we identify a lower tariff we will contact your network service provider on your behalf and arrange for your tariff to be changed. Have the peace of mind that every aspect of your energy costs will be examined and minimised as part of the Edge Utilities Power Portfolio.

Ergon Energy in Queensland is supported by the Queensland Government’s Community Service Obligation (CSO) payment which aims to ensure households and businesses in regional Queensland communities have access to power at a similar cost to those in the southeast. In many cases, you may be best placed to remain with Ergon as your retailer. However, Edge Utilities can conduct a review to ensure your sites are on the correct Ergon network tariff. In some cases we may even identify that despite Ergon’s best efforts, you can actually source your energy cheaper from another retailer.

Most times, yes. Edge Utilities can provide you with expert, independent advice about how your energy portfolio is structured, ensure you are on the correct tariffs, and make sure there aren’t any better options for your business.

Ultimately a retailer sells you energy. Network service providers deliver you energy. Even if you switch to another retailer, your network service provider will continue to be obliged to provide support and repairs in the event of a fault or supply interruption incident.
